Cumberlands Golf Outing and Golf Team Reunion

As part of Homecoming week University of the Cumberlands is hosting the fourth annual Cumberland Golf Outing and Golf Team Reunion on Friday, Oct. 9, 2009 at 12 p.m.

The outing will take place at the Crooked Creek Golf Community in London, Ky. Interested participants must RSVP by Sept. 30 and pay an entry fee of $5o. This fee covers green fee, cart and lunch.

Former UC golf coach Bill Sergent, who is now the Director of Golf at Crooked Creek, said the outing is planned to be a scramble. However, depending on the number of participants the even will switch to match play.

"The event is targeted towards Cumberland Alumni golfers," says current UC coach Chris Kraftick. "But if others are interested we will certainly not turn them down."

Sergent said, "This is the fourth year we have held this event and we expect this year to be equally successful."

There will be tee prizes handed out upon arrival. For more information contact coach Chris Kraftick at (606) 539-4543.

Parking Problem Progression

Residential students at University of the Cumberlands are frustrated because of the lack of parking around the resident halls. Since school started, parking in the dormitory parking lots cannot accommodate the student population.

The problem is reoccurring every night mainly in the lots of Harth and Gillespie Halls. One explanation could be the crowded freshman class that has come to UC this year. According to Director of Admissions, Erica Harris, out of the 454 total new freshmen, 394 of them are living on campus in the resident halls. While this growth is beneficial to UC, it has put a strain on finding housing and parking for everyone on campus.

Sophomore, Kelli Garvin, a resident of Harth stated, "I believe there are people parking in both Harth and Gillespie that are not residents of these halls."

Garvin suspects that the male residents of Siler and Rob-Cook are parking in the lots of the women's dorms. Garvin also stated, "When you do find a good parking spot in Harth, it makes you find every excuse in the world not to leave campus so you don't lose your spot!"

With the shortage of parking spots it raises the question, where does everyone who can't find a parking spot go to park? They must park somewhere. And if they park in a wrong area and get a ticket can they use this epidemic as an excuse not to pay their fine?

According to Vice President of Operations, Kyle Gilbert, as of Sept. 17, 2009 at noon there had been a total of 791 parking violations given out since classes began on Aug. 26. That averages out to be 34.4 parking tickets given out each day.
As a possible solution to this growing epidemic, suggestions might be made to park in the general parking areas. These are located behind the Bosewell Campus Center or beside the Correll Science Building on campus. Also simply park in your designated resident hall parking lot.
